Despite what most people may think about Utah…
WE’RE A PRETTY DIVERSE PEOPLE.
Ya, we have a reputation of being a very RED state – politically AND geologically – but that hardly represents who we are.
We’re known for our awesome skiing/snow boarding, low alcohol content in beer, the Sundance Film Festival and Zions National Park.
We probably have an even greater reputation for being a predominantly ‘Mormon’ state. Even within the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Mormons) there is a wide range of political beliefs. The world isn’t as black and white as Democrats and Republicans, and neither are Mormons.
Utah Voices would like to introduce you to Left wing, Right wing, and people just winging it from all walks of life in Utah. Most contributors to Utah Voices will be LDS (Mormon), yet we’ll try to be balanced in political representation. I think you’ll be surprised at how diverse Utah and the LDS people can be. Our articles on this site will primarily be politically based with LDS slants where the authors feel it appropriate.
SOME RULES:
Because this site mixes both Religion and Politics we understand that there are going to be some passionate contributions in both the articles and in comments. It should be well known that most of the authors are good friends, even though some are quite liberal and others very conservative in their viewpoints. We know each other, we love each other, we have dinners together – many of us are even in each other’s wedding pictures, for crying out loud. We also have a long history of healthy debates while maintaining respect for one another in our opinions. We would invite those who want to comment on our articles to treat us and others on this site with the same respect. Comments will not be moderated before posting beyond the basic ‘Rated PG’ filters. If this begins to be abused we’ll begin to moderate the comments.
Abuses: Attacking people is the BIGGEST no-no. Opinions are fine, but when people begin attacking others perspectives, religion, sexuality, political persuasions or characters—where it contributes nothing but to provoke hard feelings or intends to offend—the comments will be removed and registration revoked. This will also lead to comment moderation. Who judges this? All contributors to the site will judge, but contributors should allow conversations and opinions that may contradict their own to occur.
We are all for freedom of speech, but I’m sure we’ve all seen websites and forums that are filled with ignorant, rude, crass, wasteful, and idiotic people who bring down healthy discussions and drive away intelligent people who would otherwise make this site a fun one to frequent. We don’t want to become that site. So, since this is our own little island on the neutral world wide web, we reserve the right to limit how “free” your speech can get. Freedom is not Anarchy.
